Under these conditions, fungal pathogens (primarily Pythium and Phytophthora species) colonise the root tissue and cause it to decay. Once established, syngonium root rot spreads quickly and can kill the plant if not caught and treated in time.

The good news is that syngonium root rot is both preventable and, in most cases, treatable when caught at an early or intermediate stage. Understanding the warning signs and acting quickly gives the plant the best chance of making a full recovery.

Syngonium root rot often begins underground, which means the visible symptoms appear only after damage has already progressed. Knowing the early and late-stage warning signs allows you to act before the situation becomes irreversible.

Overwatering

Overwatering is the primary cause of syngonium root rot. Applying water before the top layer of soil has had a chance to dry out keeps the root zone perpetually saturated. Roots need oxygen as well as water, and a continuously waterlogged environment deprives them of the air they need to function. Weakened, oxygen-starved roots are rapidly colonised by the fungal pathogens that drive syngonium root rot.

Poor drainage

A pot without drainage holes or a mix that retains too much water prevents excess moisture from escaping after watering. Even careful, infrequent watering can lead to syngonium root rot if the water cannot drain and the roots sit in standing moisture. Dense, heavy potting mixes that compact over time are a particularly common cause, as the pore space within the medium collapses and water pools around the roots.

Oversized pot

Planting a syngonium in a pot that is significantly larger than its root system leaves a large volume of damp soil around the roots that takes a very long time to dry out between waterings. This prolonged moisture increases the risk of syngonium root rot even when watering frequency is moderate. Always pot up only one to two centimetres wider than the current root ball.

🔧 How to Treat Syngonium Root Rot

Acting quickly is critical when treating syngonium root rot. The sooner the damaged roots are removed and the plant is placed in fresh, well-draining medium, the better the chances of a full recovery.

  1. 1Remove the plant from its pot. Gently tip it out and shake away as much of the old soggy soil as you can without damaging the roots.
  2. 2Inspect all roots. Healthy roots are white or cream and feel firm. Rotted roots are brown or black, feel slimy or mushy, and may break apart when touched.
  3. 3Prune away all affected roots. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut back to healthy white tissue. If most of the root system is rotted, cut away all compromised material even if little healthy tissue remains. A small healthy root system can recover; a large rotted one cannot.

Alternatively, apply a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (3 percent diluted 1:4 with water) to the remaining roots to kill any remaining fungal spores.
  5. 5Let the roots air dry. Place the plant in a dry spot with good air circulation for thirty to sixty minutes to allow cut surfaces to callous before replanting.
  6. 6Repot in fresh medium. Use a clean pot (sterilise with diluted bleach if reusing the old one) with drainage holes. Fill with fresh, well-draining compost mixed with perlite at a 2:1 ratio.
  7. 7Water lightly. Give just enough water to moisten the medium. Do not water again until the top inch is dry. Resume normal watering only after the plant shows signs of new growth, indicating the root system has recovered.

If the rot had spread into the stem base before treatment, the plant may still decline despite good root care. In this case, take a healthy stem cutting from the upper portion of the plant and propagate it in fresh water or compost to save the genetics of the cultivar. Stem cuttings from syngoniums that have had root rot can still root successfully as long as the cutting itself comes from tissue that is not yet affected. This rescue propagation approach is worth attempting for any healthy stem with at least one node and two leaves, regardless of how severe the root damage was below.

The most effective way to prevent syngonium root rot is to establish and maintain the right watering habits. Only water when the top inch of soil is dry, use a pot with drainage holes, and never leave the pot sitting in standing water in its saucer. Use a well-draining potting mix with perlite or coarse sand rather than dense standard compost.

Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter when the plant’s growth slows and it requires less water. Check the soil before every watering session rather than following a fixed calendar schedule. Pot size also matters: choose a container only marginally larger than the current root ball to prevent excess wet soil around the roots. Following these habits consistently means syngonium root rot is a problem you may never have to deal with.

If syngonium root rot has progressed to the point where the root system is entirely compromised and the stem base is soft, the priority shifts from saving the original plant to saving the cultivar by taking cuttings from the healthy upper growth. Take stem cuttings that include at least one node and two leaves, cutting well above any dark or soft stem tissue. Place the cuttings in a jar of room-temperature water in bright indirect light.

Cuttings taken from a plant with active syngonium root rot can still root successfully as long as the cutting itself comes from tissue that is not yet affected. Change the water every two to three days to prevent bacterial build-up. Roots should emerge within two to four weeks. Once roots are two to three centimetres long, pot the cutting into fresh, well-draining medium and resume normal care. This approach is particularly valuable for rare or expensive variegated cultivars where the loss of the entire plant would be difficult to replace.

Soil choice plays a critical role in syngonium root rot prevention. Standard multi-purpose potting compost on its own retains too much moisture and compacts over time, creating the anaerobic conditions that fungal pathogens thrive in. The best approach is to use a mix of standard potting compost and perlite in a 2:1 ratio. Perlite creates air pockets in the medium that allow oxygen to reach the roots after watering and help excess water drain faster.

Alternatives to perlite include coarse horticultural sand, pumice, or bark chips. All of these add drainage and aeration to a standard mix. Avoid garden soil or heavy clay-based mixes entirely, as these compact severely when used in containers and hold water in a way that almost guarantees syngonium root rot in the medium to long term. Refreshing the potting mix every two years is also important, as even a good initial mix compacts and loses its drainage properties over time.
