Hi, I am Syngo. Plants at Glance is where I write down everything I have learned from more than a decade of growing tropical houseplants, mostly aroids and variegated varieties, so that you do not have to learn it the slow way I did.

Why I started Plants at Glance

I killed my first Monstera. Then I killed a Pilea, and very nearly a Philodendron Birkin that I had saved up for. Every time I went looking for answers online I found the same recycled advice: water when the top inch is dry, provide bright indirect light, and good luck. Nobody explained what the leaves were actually telling me, or what to do in the specific week when things started going wrong.

So I started keeping notes. What I changed, what happened next, how long recovery took, and which so called rules turned out to be nonsense. Those notes became this site.

What you will find here

There are now over 100 guides on Plants at Glance, organised so you can get to an answer quickly:

  • Complete care guides for the plants I actually grow, covering light, watering, soil, humidity, feeding, propagation and repotting in one place.
  • Troubleshooting guides for when something is already wrong. This is the largest part of the site, because this is what people search for at 11pm with a drooping plant in front of them.
  • Pest identification and treatment, from the first sticky leaf to a plant that has fully recovered.
  • The plant gallery, if you would rather browse by photo than by name.

How I write these guides

Every guide starts with a plant I have grown myself, usually for years. I write about what worked in my home, in ordinary conditions, without a greenhouse or a grow room.

Where I rely on outside sources, such as toxicity information, I link to them directly so you can check for yourself rather than taking my word for it. When something is genuinely uncertain, or when the honest answer is that it depends, I say so instead of inventing a confident number.

I also go back and update older guides. If I learn that a piece of advice I published no longer holds up, I correct it rather than quietly leaving it there.

Every photo on this site is mine

There is no stock photography on Plants at Glance. Every plant you see is one of mine, photographed in my own home, including the unglamorous ones with brown edges, pest damage and sunburn. That is deliberate. A perfect studio photo does not help you recognise the problem sitting on your windowsill, but a real one does.

What I will not do

  • Recommend a product I have not used myself.
  • Copy care advice from another site without testing it.
  • Pretend a struggling plant can always be saved. Sometimes the useful answer is to take a cutting and start again.
